The Iyd subgroup represents a set of sequences typified by the mammalian iodine dehalogenase – an essential enzyme for iodine homeostasis and mammalian thyroid function. The native substrate is iodinated tyrosine, although the mammalian deiodinase can also catalyze the dehalogenation of chlorinated and brominated substrates.
