Enzymes in the o-succinylbenzoate synthase (OSBS) family catalyze the conversion of 2-succinyl-6-hydroxy-2,4-cyclohexadiene-1-carboxylate to 4-(2'-carboxyphenyl)-4-oxybutyrate (o-succinylbenzoate), in the biosynthetic pathway for menaquinone. Although some of the enzymes in this family share only a relatively low sequence identity, ancillary information, such as examination of operon context, has been used to increase the confidence of family assignments. Some enzymes in this family are highly similar to enzymes in the N-succinylamino acid racemase (NSAR) family, and some may function biologically as NSARs in addition to OSBSs.
