In microorganisms, menaquinone is an obligatory component of the electron-transfer pathway. Whilst the many organisms (e.g. E. coli) derive menaquinone via chorismtae, some microorganisms (including pathogenic species such as Helicobacter pylori and Campylobacter jejuni) do onto contain orthologues to these genes, despite synthesizing menaquinone. Thus, an alternative pathway has been deduced in which proteins from this family are involved in menaquinone biosynthesis via futalosine. The proposed mechanism (see PMID:23763543) suggests that the SAM is stoichiometric in this reaction.
