This family represented the subunit that performs the first half reaction in FO synthase. This involves the formation of an amine-based radical on the substrate tyrosine with subsequent rearrangement and addition to the 5-amino-6-(D-ribitylamino)uracil substrate forming the stable intermediate 5-amino-5-(4-hydroxybenzyl)-6-((2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxypentyl)amino)dihydropyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione. This product then diffuses out of the CofH active site and into the CofG active site.
